We’re transforming village high streets into spaces for walking, shopping and dining with a series of special events.

What we’re doing and why

Sydney Streets celebrates local neighbourhoods, brings communities together and supports our high street businesses.

For local businesses, it’s an opportunity to produce in-store activations to help attract customers and patrons to their venues, and potentially extend trading to outdoors subject to availability and approval.

Along with enabling road closures, we’ll provide some acoustic roving entertainment, chairs and tables around the street and portable toilets.

Crowds of people gather at night near an outdoor stage. A person with a microphone performs on the stage, and well-lit shopfronts line the street in the background.
A smiling child paints a canvas at a table in the street. Other painting children sit at the table with her, and adults holding drinks talk in groups in the background.
A waiter holds a pizza in each hand as he smiles and walks between outdoor dining tables full of people. Other food stalls are in the background.

Opportunities for local businesses and organisations

About Sydney Streets

Sydney Streets was originally created as part of our community recovery plan, supporting the economic and social recovery of businesses and local communities impacted by the pandemic.

We’ll promote the Sydney Streets program through our event listing website What’s On. All business offers or activations can be listed on the free event listing platform and be part of our promotional content. Our What’s On e-newsletter has over 30,000 subscribers and the event-listing platform is an essential marketing tool for your business this summer.

To be part of the What’s On program marketing list your activations, special offers or in-store activity as early as possible.

Note the following:

  • You aren’t permitted to conduct activities outside of your allocated space or that you have not been granted permission for.
  • The road closure and special event clearways will be in effect from 8am–11:30pm, during which times vehicles will not be able to access the street.
  • You can access your allocated space from 9.30am and must have removed all items by no later than 11pm.
  • You must comply with your existing development consent and/or liquor licence.
  • The Licensee must not permit patrons of the function to take alcohol bought for consumption on the premises out of the licensed area.
  • Licensed outdoor areas must be enclosed within temporary barriers such as planter boxes or fencing.
  • No drinks in glassware are permitted within the approved outdoor area.
  • Single-use plastics and balloons are prohibited, all items must be reusable or recyclable.

  • All music/live performance must cease one hour before the event end time. You must be responsive to requests from City of Sydney event personnel to adjust volumes and timings if necessary, including pausing the entertainment to allow the crowd to disperse if there is overcrowding. A refusal to comply with a request will result in approval for the activity being withdrawn.
  • The distribution of flyers and/or other marketing/promotional collateral material is not permitted.
  • City of Sydney staff and NSW Police will be present and will provide assistance if needed.
  • Breaching these conditions may result in your approval being withdrawn.
